399 ― Greek philosopher Socrates is sentenced to death by the city of Athens for corrupting the minds of the youth and of impiety.


1539 ― Emperor Charles receives a Cardinal Pole in Toledo, Spain.


1763 ― Austria, Prussia and Saxony sign Treaty of Hubertusburg, marking the end of the French and Indian War and of the Seven Years War.

1804 ― New Jersey becomes the last northern state to abolish slavery.

1851 ― Black abolitionists invade a Boston courtroom rescuing a fugitive slave. -- From African-American Registry

1869 ― Charges of treason against Confederate President  Jefferson Davis are dropped.

1955 
― The first pilot plant to produce man-made diamonds is announced.


1970 ― As the jury continues to deliberate in the trial of the Chicago Eight, defense attorneys William Kunstler and Leonard Weinglass and three of the defendants are sentenced to prison for contempt of court.

1971 ― After 1,200 years Great Britain abandons 12-shilling system for the decimal currency ("Decimal Day").

1972 
― Sound recordings are granted U.S. federal copyright protection for the first time.


1978 ― Escaped serial killer, Theodore Robert "Ted" Bundy, is recaptured, Pensacola, FL.

1982 
― The Ocean Ranger semi-submersible oil-drilling rig is lost off of Newfoundland, 84 die.


1992 ― Serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, is found sane and guilty of killing 15 boys. He is later killed by inmates while serving his prison sentence.

1995 
― The population of the People's Republic of China reaches 1.2 billion.

2002 
― At the Tri-State Crematory in La Fayette, Georgia, investigators find uncremated bodies disposed of in the woods and buildings on the crematorium's property. The discovery reveals one of the worst incidents of abuse in the funeral service industry.


2011 ― Libyan protests begin opposing Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi's rule. These protests would ultimately lead to his assassination.

2013 
― Over 1,200 people are injured after a meteor (video) breaks up over Chelyabinsk, Russia.

2013 – A meteor explodes over Russia, injuring 1,500 people as a shock wave blows out windows and rocks buildings. This happens unexpectedly only hours before the expected closest ever approach of the larger and unrelated asteroid 2012 DA14.
